KnowCLT: Explore Charlotte's History with an Immersive App
KnowCLT is a free app developed by Museum of the New South Inc. that allows users to take an immersive journey through the history of Charlotte, North Carolina. Whether you're strolling through the city or exploring from the comfort of your home, KnowCLT provides a unique and educational experience.
The app's first journey takes you through Charlotte's Brooklyn neighborhood, once the largest and most vibrant Black community in the Carolinas. Through a combination of narration, photos, poetry, and the voices of former residents, you'll gain a deep understanding of Brooklyn's rich history.
KnowCLT offers an augmented reality feature that brings historic sites to life. As you explore the neighborhood on foot, you can choose your own path and visit seven different sites. For example, you can hold your phone up to where the city's first public library for Black Charlotteans once stood and see the Brevard Street Library appear on your screen.
